Rare Antique Staffordshire Plate - Commemorating first balloon flight, Circa 1830
Rare Antique Staffordshire Plate - Commemorating first balloon flight, Circa 1830 Enoch Wood & Sons.
A rare and exceptional Staffordshire transfer printed Plate featuring the take off of a gas balloon from a Georgian city in England, possibly Bath.
Almost certainly a commemorative plate commissioned to record the flight (probably the first flight) and made especially for the occasion by Staffordshire potters Enoch Wood & Sons probably around 1830/40. The grape border design (a design very much associated with Wood & Sons) would have been selected by the organisers of the flight as balloon flights were often celebrated by the pilot (aeronaut) and passengers by drinking champagne.
There are no marks on reverse, the transfer print is in an underglaze colour of dark red/maroon. This is a rare example in excellent condition - no chips, cracks and crazing.
