Vintage Military Whip with Original Whip Holder SOLD
Military Whip with Original Whip Holder, dated 1937 - with MOD "Broad Arrow" Procurement Markings.
For sale here is a British Army military issue whip, probable Coldstream Guards, possibly Royal Artillery, Fuselliers or MP, dated 1937 with procurement markings. It was probably wall-mounted in the regimental station/guard office for emergencies, discipline, insurgences etc. It comes complete with its original wall mounting circular Whip Holder. Rare to find together.
It is marked with the British Military procurement "broad arrow" mark as follows: C (broad arrow) 12. The acronym "C" in the British Army often signified "Coldstream" for Coldstream Guards. It's also marked with the date: 1937. There is also another small "C" mark: C (crown) 14.
The handle (shaft) is 17" in length, and is tapered and octagonal sided. The whip (thong) is plaited leather with a 2-prong twisted string end-piece.
This is an interesting and rare item for the military collector. This type of whip is similar in length and form to the "rent collector's whip" used for personal defence and control. Whips or lashes of course, have a long and chequered history of operation in both the Royal Navy and British Army - where they were often harshly used to quell mutinies, insurgences, maintain discipline etc. It is completely original and very good condition - please see photographs.
