Antique Brills Sea Salt Packaging Wooden Advertising Sign, Original 1880s
An original wooden packaging case lid wooden advertising sign for Brills Sea Salt, circa 1880s.
It has survived as a backing board on an Oxford Picture frame of the same period. It is a rare survivor, packing cases were not intended to last long!
The typeface which was randomly painted, presumably using individual letter templates, is still good and strong, although faded in places. The board itself, bearing in mind it is made from unprepared pine, is in remarkably good condition. Please see photos - which also show it "in situ" in the frame it came in.
Brills were a major supplier of seasalt for home baths in the late Victorian period. It was sold in Chemists and Grocers in bags sold at 1. 1/2 pence per bath and was described as 'invigorating and refreshing".
