18th C Spanish, Moorish influenced or Spanish Colonial Wooden Trinket Box with Decorative Ark Top and Iron Strap Work
For sale here is a splendid 18th C Spanish or Spanish Colonial wooden trinket / safe box with decorative inscribed ark top and iron strap work and lock set on bun feet. The lid open and closes well.
Dating from the late 1800s or early 1900s it is in excellent condition for its age, without woodworm or serious splits or deterioration.
It is of good size being 14.5" long 9"high, 7.5" wide, and look well as a decorative and interesting display on a side table.
Typical of the Spanish Colonial period with its shape and decorative incision work. I'm not sure if the symbols on the design were influenced by the early Spanish history of the Moors or their connection with Central and South American cultures. Either way, the decorative work makes for a striking item!
It is believed it originates from Spain, or one of its colonies or settlements in Central-Northern America.
