Signed and dated. S.J.R., March 10th 1854 
 
Condition of the watercolour is very good indeed, with good colouring and detail. No foxing to speak of. The gilt frame is also fairly good as is the mount. Please see photos. The painting has been executed by the artist with great skill and liveliness showing very good detail and realism.
 
Note book. When the British Government passed the Slave Trade Act in 1807, the task of enforcing it fell to the Royal Navy. Between 1808 and 1860, the Navy’s West Africa Squadron captured 1,600 slave ships and freed 150,000 Africans.
 
Britain’s efforts to break up trade later spread across North Africa, the Middle-East and the Indian Ocean. Overall it took nearly 60 years to abolish the trade for good.
 
This is a rare item showing an important element of Britain's history and relates to current considerations of social and historical context.
