Rare Royal Navy Ship's Sign (unregulated period) early 19th C. believed HMS Wilboar 1808-1810[ /b]
For sale here is a Royal Navy Ships Sign believed to be from the tenders/lifeboats of HMS Wildboar which floundered in the Scillies in 1810.
The sign is made during a period in Royal Navy history when ship's signs were unregulated and often commissioned by the ship's captain. The design however has many of the features of the post 1918 regulated signs adopted by the Royal Navy; the rope surround, crown, illustration relating directly to the ship's name etc.
Made of metal, the rope surround a cast metal and the painted inner almost certainly brass.
Dimensions: about 5+ inches (14cm) at their widest. For there age and history and in remarkable good condition for its age and history.
