Titled: Oyster Smack
I’ve long been fascinated by the oyster and shrimping smacks that worked out of King’s Lynn during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
When fishing the oyster beds of The Wash, these shallow-draught boats would often “dry out” on the mudflats at low tide while the crew raked for oysters. Sometimes the men slept aboard overnight, waiting for the morning tide to carry them home to Lynn.
